The old city of Marrakech is a deliberate tangle of alleys that defeats every map and most phones. Getting lost is unavoidable and, honestly, the point: the souks, the hidden riads and the sudden bursts of a spice market reveal themselves best when you have no idea where you are.
The one thing to watch is the friendly local who insists your destination is closed, or offers to guide you to it. What follows is a long detour to a cousin’s shop and, at the end, a firm expectation of payment.
An unasked-for guide in the medina is never actually free. Settle that before you follow anyone.
The fix is simple: agree a price up front, or politely decline and trust your own wrong turns. Getting lost on your own costs nothing, and tends to show you more.
